IMASA Western Cape Heartsaver Hands-Only CPR Workshop

The Western Cape Islamic Medical Association (IMASA) is proud to announce the successful completion of its Heartsaver Hands-Only CPR workshop, held on 18 July 2026. The workshop was facilitated by Taaliah Sathar, a certified Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor, and brought together members committed to strengthening their ability to respond confidently during cardiac emergencies.

Sudden cardiac arrest can happen without warning, affecting anyone, anywhere, at any time. The actions taken within the first few minutes can mean the difference between life and death. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death among both men and women globally, and cardiac arrest may result from a variety of underlying heart conditions. Immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can double or triple a victim’s chance of survival following cardiac arrest.

The workshop aimed to teach participants high-quality hands-only CPR, a simple yet powerful intervention that helps maintain blood circulation to vital organs until emergency medical services arrive. Participants also explored the Chain of Survival, learning how early recognition of cardiac arrest, activation of emergency medical services, immediate high-quality CPR, and early defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) work together to significantly improve survival outcomes.

Combining evidence-based teaching with practical, hands-on skills training, the workshop provided participants with the opportunity to practice correct hand placement, appropriate compression depth, compression rate, and techniques to deliver effective chest compressions with confidence. Emphasis was placed on mastering physical skill, overcoming hesitation, and understanding the importance of quick action during an emergency.

Beyond learning a lifesaving technique, the workshop reinforced a culture of preparedness, responsibility, and community service. By equipping more members with these essential skills, IMASA continues to invest in healthier, safer communities where more people are empowered to respond when every second counts.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all the participants for their enthusiasm, commitment, and willingness to learn. We look forward to continuing to empower our members through practical, high-quality educational initiatives that strengthen our communities and ultimately help save lives.
