Branch Actvities
The Eastrand Branch began with the aim of extending IMASA activities in the areas of Benoni, Boksburg, Nigel and Springs. The bBanch started off with a handful of keen members constituting the executive committee. They have in recent years increased membership to a sizable amount with a large portion of membership coming from Allied Health Professionals.
The Branch has had numerous health days; these have been hosted at community venues, orphanages and masaajid based in informal settlements.
The Eastrand Branch has also been key in the inception and coordination of the THERAPY PROJECT. The project is aimed to assist needy disabled children with sponsored private therapy where they have no access to other services. The project coordinators ran various fundraising events including ‘Spur’ charity days and cycling challenges. The project has managed to offer therapy to many children over the years, therapy not previously accessed by these children due to financial factors.
The Branch also partnered with the Early Childhood Intervention Centre and offered workshops for parents and teachers. The ‘Knowledge is Power’ series ran workshops in aspects of childhood development, covering areas such as concentration, school readiness, language development and discipline.
Going forward, the Branch plans to continue in the activities and ethos of IMASA. They hope to return to health screening days, regular CPR projects, CME events and community-empowering workshops Inshaa Allah.
The Branch has also been actively involved in CME events for health professionals over the years.
Topics tackled in these CME’s ranged to accommodate medical and allied professionals, and usually accompanied interesting ethics talks for the Muslim health professional.
Medical education was occasionally extended to community members with talks and presentations in topics such as women’s health.
In 2016, members of the Branch completed a BLS course with the intention of expanding the IMASA CPR/AED project. The main objective being to equip the community with the basic CPR skills in case of an emergency.
This would include training the general public and students of the various schools. The Branch, has since, had CPR demos at local schools and at health screening days.
