The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa [IMASA] 40th Convention was held in Durban on the 1st and 2nd October 2022 at the Coastlands, Musgrave Hotel. One thing that is remarkable about the IMASA Convention is that it is also a family event, where arrangements are made for the accompanying family members of the Professional Delegates, to keep them occupied and entertained during the medical conference. That increases the flavour of socialising, meeting and greeting and attending the Gala Dinner all together as a common meeting point for all delegates and families.
The theme was “FORTY and Forward”, where we celebrated 40 years of conventions and the achievements of the IMASA. The Working Committee considered the significance of Forty in Islam and took us on a journey down memory lane, reminiscing 40 years of wonderful memories, with Guest Speaker; Dr Mahomed Hanief Dawood Khatree. Alhumdulillah

The opening plenary session was a highlight of the programme commencing with a warm welcome from Mr Mohammed Ameen Hassen from Standard Bank, followed by an interesting workshop facilitated by Mr Hassen and his colleague from Merchant Capital, Mr Ryan Cohen. Both speakers were very engaging and set the tone for the rest of the event. The programme continued with an address by our International Guest Speaker; Shaykh Sharif H. Banna and the Regent Business School Managing Director; Prof Ahmed Shaikh. The presence with demonstrations of the 3D Printing, Drone Technology and flying drones in the delegates hall – a FIRST in Artificial Intelligence introduced to the IMASA delegates. The international Islamic scholar, Shaykh Sharif H. Banna from the United Kingdom, skilled in many diverse topics such as; Quraan, Seerah, Law and Ethics, Islamic Economics, and much more, addressed the delegates at the convention and left them spirituality captivated with his eloquence and versatility. Post-convention his further interactions continued with student groups, the general public and other groups in KZN, Gauteng and Cape Town.

The Students’ Programme chaired by members of the IMASA Student Wing, Mr Mohamed Hoosen Suleman, Mr Abdullah Omarjee, and Ms Naseeha Omar. The Student Wing is directly supervised by Specialist Anaesthetist, Dr Mohamed Raiman. The Convention’s Student Programme boasted a resounding success with nearly 50 students, local and nationwide in attendance.
Key topics of discussion included “Creating a sustainable and prosperous future for Islamic Medical Youth: Challenges, Successes, Recommendations” by Dr Maseeha Ansermeah and “The link between Islam and Science and the role of Islamic Medical Youth closing the gap” by Dr Tahmid Quazi. The keynote presentation was undertaken by world-renowned, internationally acclaimed scholar and academic, and guest of honour, Shaykh Sharif Al Banna on the topic “The need for social cohesion and unity within a divided Ummah: goals to work towards.”
The medical youth fraternity present at the Convention remained engaged throughout discussions and the Convention, through its dynamic speakers, certainly contributed to the growth and development of the future health workforce. IMASA understands the value and importance of investing in the academic progress of the youth. Students and early career professionals in the medical field play a pivotal role in ensuring good health and well-being.
