Our Caring Changes Lives
It was to take care of these aspects of holistic well-being that the Islamic Medical Association KZN branch established its social wing – Baytul Nur (aptly meaning “House of Light”).
IMA Baytul Nur is a professional counselling centre that provides services to Muslim and Non-Muslim Communities.
The organisation focuses on addressing the social problems all communities are prone to, as well as creating awareness about them through the provision of well informed and targeted interventions which deal with everything from domestic violence to marital and family issues, substance abuse, trauma etc. IMA Baytul Nur’s broad vision is to serve and preserve families.
Social and financial assessments are carried out to assess clients’ eligibility for receiving assistance from the organisation. Services include:
- Renal Dialysis
- Optometry and Cataract Procedures
- Audiology
- Emergency Medical Procedures
- Stationery Drive
- Bursaries for Medical Students
- Patient Devices and Mobility Aids
- Adult Diapers
- Hearing Aids
- Hamper Distribution
- Winter Warmth Programme
- Uniform Drive
Our volunteers play a pivotal role in the activities of the organisation that include caring for the elderly, fundraising, planning and coordinating events, soup kitchen and awareness campaigns. Regular get togethers are held for the elderly in our community. Through our involvement with older persons, it is clear that they are a neglected group in society. Some have been shunned by their families whilst others have the burden of caring for their grandchildren whilst their parents are heavily addicted to drugs. Many lack basic needs and struggle to survive on their state pensions. IMA Baytul-Nur offers support to those in need.
Our women’s programmes bring women from all walks of life together. Many are given the opportunity to access services that they are unable to afford privately. Our aim is to uplift and empower men, women and children to be able to function adequately amidst all the challenges society is faced with. Thousands are living under pathetic conditions.
The state of the public health sector is in dire straits and without intervention of the IMA many disadvantaged citizens would die an agonising death or suffer major health challenges without access to quality healthcare.
Please donate generously to these life changing projects so that the IMA can continue supporting the ill, the poor, the disabled and the elderly. Creating a healthy society is not one-dimensional. On the one hand there’s the physical well- being of an individual to consider. But equally important, and inextricably linked to one’s physical health, is one’s psychological and spiritual well-being.

Frail Care Facility:
A facility that was lacking in the Muslim community and one that is much needed. For many elders and senior citizens who are ill and do not have family supportive services a frail care facility is an option. There are many facilities that provide nursing and frail care, however they are run by other religious groups and do not cater for the needs of Muslims. At the Frail Care stage, a person would require a lot of nursing and he / she may need help with dressing, washing and toileting and may or may not be bedridden .The primary role of the frail care centre is to render care to individuals with physical , psychological , emotional and social needs that cannot be met within one’s home. The Islamic Medical Association has established a 16-bed facility for frail and elderly women.
