IMASA LADYSMITH: A DAY OF COMPASSION, SERVICE AND HOPE

Wembezi High School, Wembezi, Estcourt | Sunday, 11 October 2026

250 Patients.
One Mission. Countless Blessings.
Alhamdulillah!

The Islamic Medical Association of South Africa (IMASA – Ladysmith Branch), in collaboration with the Al Imdaad Foundation and dedicated partners, conducted another impactful multidisciplinary medical outreach at Wembezi High School in Wembezi, Estcourt, bringing much-needed healthcare services to vulnerable and underserved communities.

Despite an unexpected electricity disruption which delayed proceedings by an hour, the outreach successfully attended to 250 patients. The overwhelming demand was evident when gates had to be closed as early as 10h00.

A committed team of healthcare professionals volunteered their time, expertise and compassion, offering optometry, dentistry, audiology, physiotherapy, family medicine, orthotic services, pharmacy support and general health screenings.

The four optometrists worked tirelessly until 14h30, with over 100 pairs of spectacles reportedly dispensed, making an immediate difference to patients who might otherwise face lengthy waiting periods for prescription glasses.

Dental services were equally impactful, with an estimated 60 extractions, representing approximately R18,000 in treatment value at a conservative R300 per extraction. These figures highlight the tremendous value of volunteer-driven healthcare and the immediate relief such initiatives provide.

For many beneficiaries, the outreach meant far more than medical treatment. It meant restored vision, relief from pain, improved mobility, hearing assessments, essential medication, professional advice and, above all, the reassurance that they had not been forgotten.

The success of this initiative was made possible through exceptional teamwork and collaboration.

Heartfelt appreciation goes to the volunteer healthcare professionals, IEC educators and learners, IPSS, Lenmed La Verna Hospital, the Department of Health, and Mrs Zungu and the staff of Wembezi High School for their invaluable contributions.

Special recognition goes to the Al Imdaad Foundation, particularly Abed Karrim, who initiated the project, chief coordinator Hassan Shazi, deputy coordinator Mohamed “Bob” Asvat and their dedicated team, whose meticulous planning and commitment were instrumental in making the outreach a success.

This initiative once again demonstrated the true spirit of Ukhuwa (brotherhood), unity and selfless service. Every volunteer, organiser, driver, educator and supporting partner played an essential role in bringing hope and healing to those most in need.

May Allah accept the sacrifices, dedication and sincere efforts of every individual involved, grant Barakah in their work and enable IMASA to continue serving humanity with compassion, excellence and unwavering commitment. Aameen.
