5th Diabetes and Ramadan Africa Conference

On behalf of the organising committee for the 2026 DaR Africa Congress and Workshop, it is a pleasure to invite you to participate in the 5th Annual Congress, scheduled to take place in Durban on 17–18 January 2026 at the Coastlands Umhlanga Hotel.

Fasting in general, and especially during Ramadan, poses a unique challenge to both people living with diabetes and healthcare systems. Africa has approximately 450 million Muslims, with 330 million residing in the sub-Saharan region. This region is projected to experience an exponential increase in diabetes prevalence. The challenges of diabetes care in Africa are often not considered in international meetings where technology and innovations discussed are unavailable to those in Africa.

Addressing Diabetes & Fasting Challenges
Latest Global Guidelines (LAC)

The Diabetes and Ramadan International Alliance (DaR-Africa) conference was initiated to reflect these challenges. This will be the 5th congress, organised in association with SEMSDA and IMASA, and endorsed by the Kenyan Diabetes Study Group and Nigeria Diabetes and Ramadan Research Group.

The meeting will unpack the updated 2025 DaR-ADADIF Diabetes and Ramadan Guidelines in the context of Africa. The chair of the guideline committee and chair of the International Alliance, Prof. Mohamed Hassanein, will be the keynote speaker at the meeting.

In addition, invited speakers from East and West Africa will be part of the faculty.
We look forward to your participation in this event.
